purr mama resistor or p.m.r. started out as purderous magina records in Montreal in 1993. yrs truly hesitated before starting a new label because there seemed to be such a glut of them already, but eventually caved in. was the original name inspired by Rene GIRARD? perhaps, but when the imagery of the variations on the p and the m became clearly apparent many years later, yrs truly began reflecting on whether that was really the ideal energy to manifest. so after some years, the name was changed to purr mama resistor. as far as the name change goes, pi mascara rhythm & poo mumbata retrograde were close contenders as of the middle of the first, post-millenium decade.
p.m.r. moved over the ocean to København, Danmark in 1996 and has been based there more or less ever since. sure, there was 1999-2000 in the San Francisco Bay Area, and chunks of time in France & India & on the road, but voila.
it started out with hand-copied cassettes, but eventually we released 7"s by Howard North and sfu-ma-to in the nineties, and then an LP by Obstinate Esther in 2003. we started with CDRs in 1998 & they have since overtaken tapes as our main medium (together with digital downloads). if Carl has his way though, the next sfu-ma-to record will be on vinyl though...
our small books have been on everything from handwritten recycled envelope paper, to photocopied A4 books, to photocopied runs half that size (A-whatever that is...).
